Saudi King Names Woman To Deputy Education Minister Post

(Crealis) -- King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud appointed Saturday Norah al-Fayez as Saudi Arabia's deputy education minister for female education affairs. The decision, which is entails the first-ever woman named to a ministerial post, is being hailed as part of the King's efforts to modernize and reform that nation's political system.

Norah al-Fayez, who is 52 and an education expert, was quoted in an interview granted in Al Arabiya.net as saying "It is a medal of honor to all Saudi women and I am proud and thankful to his majesty for appointing me to this important post," adding that she is committed to improving the standards of girls' performance in school.

In that same interview, Fayez said her appointment is important because it shows the king's commitment to enabling Saudi women to achieve higher standards of success and accomplishment.

In an interview in the Saudi Gazette, Fayez acknowledged her new role as "a great responsibility," but stressed that the task "won’t be too difficult as long as there are highly-qualified female and male teams in the ministry."

"If I’m going to work alone," Fayez said in the Saudi Gazette article, "I think it will be a tough task. But with the help of the female and male teams I think I will be able to shoulder the burden. Those who came before us have made their mark and our duty now is to continue their good work."

Improving female education and increasing the role of women in society is at the forefront of Fayez agenda, according to various press reports.

"Women in Saudi Arabia, have worked with men in this country for a long time. I see this as a huge responsibility and a motivation for me to work harder. I will work with the ministry team to develop education and improve female education in the Kingdom without forgetting the teachings of Islam," said Fayes, according to the Saudi Gazette.
